First Wii Science meeting at Stanford University

The researchers of the Wii Science have attended a project meeting at Stanford University on 16th April 2009. The Wii Science is a joint research project between Södertörn University and Stanford University. The meeting was held at Wallenberg Global Learning Network administration in Stanford campus, and Terry Winograd, Wendy Ju and Ugochi Acholonu were present there from Stanford, and Martin Jonsson, Zeynep Ahmet and Saiful Islam Sumon from the Södertörn University.

After the meeting, Swedish team has visited Stanford’s collaborative research partner school named Nueva Innovation Lab in Palo Alto.

Patrick Bach, från DICE kommer och föreläser om speldesign och spelutveckling mellan 13.00 och 14.00 och svarar sedan på frågor från publiken.

Patrick var senior producer på DICE.s senaste spel Battlefield Bad Company 2, som fick strålande recensioner över hela världen när den släpptes 5 mars i år.

I sambande med detta kommer spelklubben GAMESH bildas, på intiativ av
IMD-studenten Karolin Lo. (Spelklubb inspirerat av  filmklubb)
GAMESH anordnar därefter ett student-LAN från klockan 16.00 och framåt.

Jon Manker och Maria Wolrath-Söderberg presenterar inder institutionsdagen ett exempel på ämnesöverskridande initiativ som spirar: Arbetet med ansökningar inom det relativt obeforskade gränslandet mellan spel och retorik. Arbetet går under namnet The Rhetoric of Games, Integrating Analysis and Design. Publiken visade stort gillande!image

Two doctoral student positions in Media Technology at Södertörn University

Södertörns högskola (Södertörn University) in south Stockholm is a new, dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. A large proportion of the university staff holds doctorates and there is a strong link between undergraduate education and research. Södertörn University currently has 12 000 students and 750 employees. Undergraduate and postgraduate education and research are conducted in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Technology and Education. Our site is in Flemingsberg. It offers more than 70 study programmes within the Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Education. In addition, there are over 400 courses that students may choose to study independently. Responsibilities

The PhD students shall primarily devote themselves to their own post-graduate education. There may be additional educational or administrative responsibilities, however limited to 20% of the total working time. Altogether may the employment as PhD student last eight years at the maximum, however not exceeding full-time PhD studies of four years.

The positions are related to two research projects at School of Communication, Media and IT, respectively.

Position 1. (Reference number 321/22/2010).

Profile towards work in the multidisciplinary study and development of metadata ontologies for participatory and collaborative web applications. Examples of such applications include Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and Wikipedia, all of which rely, at least partially, of conceptual structure (ontologies) contributed by community members. The practices of accumulating metadata from the participants include tagging (“folksonomies”), profiling and annotation and use statistics, either explicitly or implicitly. The project arises from that conventional approaches to ontologies are typically conceptualized in the opposite direction, that is, a priori in a top-down and hierarchical fashion, and are thereby not ideally suited for the emerging forms of media. As an alternative to a priori ontologies, metadata ontologies that arise from the level of participants imply new types of media technologies for applications ranging from from knowledge-construction in collaborative environments to locative media, political communication, and scientific visualization. The overall goal is the conceptualization of what can be called interactive multi-perspective media. The work will involve formal modeling and software development aiming at working prototypes.

Position 2. (Reference number 322/22/2010).

Profile towards interaction design for innovative social and user-generated mobile media. We are already seeing how mobile terminals such as the iPhone and Android make it possible to create new forms of services that help people get in touch with each other and their surroundings. However, we also believe that the applications available today have hardly started to scratch the surface of the future possibilities of social, shared and user-generated content in a mobile setting. Taking a user-oriented starting point, the student will study mobile activities in order to design and test a variety of novel applications and services. These may be either implemented on standard mobile terminals, or on specialized devices including novel tangible and embodied interfaces. The focus is not on the technical implementation but on making the user experience on mobile devices richer and more enjoyable than it is today. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the Mobile Life Centre, a research centre at Stockholm University with partners in the telecom industry.

Competence and selection

The applicant should have an academic grade corresponding to the level of MA, M.Sc. or Swedish magister with at least 120 ECTS (or högskolepoäng) in one or more of the following areas:

(1st position) Media technology, informatics, cognitive science, or another background matching the challenge. In addition, a multi-disciplinary orientation, insight to collaborative/participatory web applications, and a level of programming skills will be appreciated as merits.

(2nd position) Interaction design, media technology, human-computer interaction or a related field. Experience with mobile devices and/or tangible interaction is an advantage, as is experience in design, field studies and user testing. The student should be prepared to work throughout whole development cycle, including preparatory studies, concept design, prototyping, and evaluation.

The employer will be Södertörn University, but the condition of employment is that the applicant will be accepted to doctoral studies at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences at Stockholm University, which will issue the student the degree of PhD (filosofie doktor) after successfully finishing the studies and the doctoral dissertation. The particular criterion of acceptance to the PhD studies is that the applicant has the level of independence judgments and the maturity of critical scientific thinking necessary to carry out the doctoral studies successfully.

The regulations for employment as a PhD student are given by the University law, Chapter 5, §1 -7.

The application must be in English and include:

  1. A short CV, including a short biography
  2. Two copies of your diploma work. If you have written your thesis/essay in a language other than Swedish or English you must also include three copies of an English summary. Copies of relevant publications will be appreciated as additional merits.
  3. Your diploma and a listing of the content of your studies (or a certified translation to English).
  4. Your personal reflections and proposed starting points for the project of interest (1 or 2), max two pages.

The last application date is April 30, 2010.

Installation av professorer

11 december installerades 14 professorer på Södertörns högskola.

Vår institution Kommunikation, Medier och IT fick totalt fyra professorer installerade denna gång, Mauri Kaipainen och Lars Erik Holmquist, professorer i medieteknik och Jens Kjeldsen och Mats Rosengren, professorer i retorik. En av våra IMD-studenter, Natalie,  som också är studentambassadör bar den svenska fanan.

Nytt forskningsprojekt – Nomadic Interaction Models

Att arbeta tillsammans utan en gemensam plattform

Allt fler arbetar från ett fik eller hotellobbyn. Man arbetar tillsammans via mobil teknik, men utan gemensam plattform. Möjligheterna finns i tekniken, men används tekniken som vi tror? Och vad behövs ytterligare? Ett forskningsprojekt ska kartlägga teknikanvändning vid “nomadarbete”.

Det kan vara en fågelskådare som sitter på pass vid en sjö. Med dagens teknik vet de sekundsnabbt när någon annan fått span på en spännande art någonstans i världen. De kan ta reda på allt om arten och hur de tar sig dit om de önskar.

Går du förbi ett café idag, ser du den alldeles säkert. Ensamarbetaren som slagit sig ner djupt försjunken. Med möjlighet att samarbeta med andra, kanske på ett fik på andra sidan jorden. Likadant i hotellobbyn.

Teknik för samarbete utan fasta former

Denna typ av “nomadarbete” ska Maria Normark, lektor i medieteknik vid Södertörns högskola, kartlägga i ett forskningsprojekt. Lösa grupperingar av människor samarbetar men har inte någon gemensam plattform. Man har inte gemensamma arbetstider eller gemensam arbetsplats. Alla har sina egna tekniska hjälpmedel.Maria Normark

marianormarkSatsning på kvinnliga forskare

Maria Normark inleder från och med 1 juli 2010 arbetet med projektet “Nomadic Interaction Models: On Adoption and Adaption of Mobile Technologies”.

Hon är en av femton kvinnliga disputerade forskare som fått halva sin finansiering betald av VINNOVAs VINNMER-program. Den andra hälften finansieras av Södertörns högskola och Mobile Life VINN Excellence Center på Stockholms universitet.

VINNMER inriktar sig främst på att förstärka möjligheten till forskarmeritering efter doktorsexamen för disputerade forskare inom områden med behov av bättre könsbalans på senior nivå.
